it's raining like crazy outside. i was going to be on my way back to Davis by now, but it's not happening anymore. sorry boys, it's not good to be on the freeway today. a check online tells me the wind is 33mph with gusts up to 44mph and .8miles visibility. anyway, have a happy new year's and don't get drowned by looking at the sky... |

http://onegoodmove.org/1gm/1gmarchive/002132.html#002132To get federal funding, organizations like "Silver Ring Thing" must not speak about positive aspects of condoms but instead must focus only on when they don't work. This is a link you should follow, you should see this if you haven't already. I'm scared to death. Also, why do we have this idea of "technical virginity" which permits oral or anal sex? Why would the government advocate "education" which is "faith-based" and results in unsafe behavior? Once again I'm feeling that urge to leave. |

I really like the reasoning behind their decision; to get the money, Brazil would have to submit their program to certain American 'ideological' standards. Read about it |

Last night Daniel and I retreated to the secret lab, carried in a secret chair, kicked aside the empty toilet-paper rolls, and proceeded to transform him from Mountain-Dan to Incredible-Chops Dan. Here's what that transformation looked like: ( cick me )

So a lot of people don't give a shit about ASUCD. I for one didn't until Rob Roy and the F.U.C.K. slate started campaigning this winter. That got me interested. I started to care about issues. I formed opinions. And then, this morning, it was announced to the world that Rob Roy had been disqualified. I gave him a hug when I saw him on campus to let him know that I was sad, disappointed, and still a friend/supporter. He told me that he was going to fight it. Anyone who remembers why I hate John Kerry knows how good that made me feel. But I guess he didn't have to. Check this out. I've got the total votes for the two highest-scoring candidates in the first round (votes even out in subsequent rounds, so this is the only way to see Rob's success): Robert Roy 544 ELECTED -- 1st round Avanindar Avi Singh 386 The two highest-scoring candidates are F.U.C.K. and Independant! And Rob was the natural first-choice by an incredible margin. Go, see for yourself So, according to word on the UCDavis LJ community, the elections committee decided to give the people what they asked for - ROB ROY! I read a poem of his before I met him and thought, I like this guy. I don't remember where I first actually met him (actually I first saw him in Olson wearing a funny suit), but working with him at KDVS was awesome. I couldn't have asked for a better guy to have answered phones with during last Spring's fundraiser. And now the man who bings us live music and other fun (remember when Alternatice Film Club showed Six-string Samurai?), is our senator. And F.U.C.K. if he's going to let us down. |

That's from a weekly paper in Toronoto. Other than the words under the bus, it really applies to Davis, no? Why didn't we buy a bus instead of a firetruck? |

"Students at Exeter University put the institution up for sale on internet auction site eBay as part of their protest against proposed cuts." Sure, it got taken down because they weren't "in a position to sell" but not before getting a high "mock bid" of "£10m." That's about $18,884,338.91 (this conversion rate is sad but valid as of this writing. source: http://www.xe.com/ucc/). I'd say they made their point. You may be wondering why they did this (and I'll give you a link to the BBC article at the end of this if you want to read more). Well, their university decided that a solution to budget problems was to "end degrees in music, chemistry and Italian" (students currently in those majors being allowed to complete their studies). What do you think? An unlikely choice of majors to end? We used to have Geography and Latin but don't now. I wonder what three majors might cause less upset if ended... any ideas? ok, here's the link to the story: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/devon/4040777.stm |

Ok, so remember I was upset when Kerry quit before all was said and done? I think what's happening in Ukraine is a good example of why it's good to quit (but when it's over, not when the votes are still uncounted). |

Maureen Dowd, NY Times columnist - http://www.nytimes.com/2004/11/04/opinion/04dowd.html?incamp=article_popular_1Thomas Friedman column: "Two Nations Under God" - http://www.nytimes.com/2004/11/04/opinion/04friedman.html?incamp=article_popular_2 If, for some reason, you're too busy to follow these links (or if you don't want to set up an account with the NY Times) at least read this excerpt from the first column: Tom Coburn, the new senator from Oklahoma, has advocated the death penalty for doctors who perform abortions and warned that "the gay agenda" would undermine the country. He also characterized his race as a choice between "good and evil" and said he had heard there was "rampant lesbianism" in Oklahoma schools. Jim DeMint, the new senator from South Carolina, said during his campaign that he supported a state G.O.P. platform plank banning gays from teaching in public schools. He explained, "I would have given the same answer when asked if a single woman who was pregnant and living with her boyfriend should be hired to teach my third-grade children." John Thune, who toppled Tom Daschle, is an anti-abortion Christian conservative - or "servant leader," as he was hailed in a campaign ad - who supports constitutional amendments banning flag burning and gay marriage. |

The UK Mirror asks the same question I've heard from a few of my friends, a question I'm sure is on the minds of many others in one form or another, "How can 59,054,087 people be so dumb?"* This same question was asked of livejournal user 'green_october' by a friend of hers in England: "How did Bush get re-elected? Are the people in your country stupid? I just don’t understand"** Well, I don't understand how so many people could be stupid. In fact, I refuse to believe that they are. I think they are mostly (if not all) intelligent people just like you and I would like to think we are. And this belief of mine is why I must ask, how can so many people be intolerant? How can homophobia be so strong? How can racism be so rampant? How can any women refuse to grant her sisters an abortion if that is her choice? Where is our human solidarity? I don't ask "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"*** Rather, I ask, "My brothers and sisters of the human race, why have we forsaken each other?" In a BBC article about Kerry supporters waiting, full of hope, for the announcement that their man had won, an african-american woman says, "In some ways I think Bush was closer to me...On gay marriage and abortion, I know Kerry was trying to be tolerant, but in my heart I feel George W Bush's values are closer to mine."**** This election has given the country to the Republican party. The Senate is Republican. The House of Representatives is Republican. The President is Republican. If a Supreme Court Justice dies, his replacement will be chosen by our conservative, Republican president. "Vice-President Dick Cheney has suggested the administration now has a mandate for a range of conservative social and economic policies."***** America, you have given them this mandate, this is your choice. Why America, a country founded on principles of equality, liberty, and justice, would be the home of an intolerant people and their intolerant government is beyond me. I can only look to my follow men and women and hope to see some answer. I can only hope that all of our Supreme Court justices outlive this administration. I can only ask those of you who know me to do your best to be not only tolerant but accepting. I can only dedicate myself to being accepting. I can only wonder why. Why? *http://images.icnetwork.co.uk/upl/mirror/nov2004/1/0/000ADF94-E181-1189-B6E080BFB6FA0000.jpg **http://www.livejournal.com/users/green_october/70786.html?style=mine ***Matthew 27:46, King James Version ****http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3982051.stm *****http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3983415.stm |

John, I thought you would have made a good president. Not a great president, but a decent one. Better, at any rate, than Bush would have been. I suppose I should say "will be" at this point. Better than Bush will be. This morning I turned to CNN.com and found the electoral votes split 254 Bush, 252 you. Then my friend told me that you had given up. I didn't initially believe him. But all the news stations on my TV and the BBC online told me that it was true. I am heartbroken. How could you abandon me, John? I didn't vote for you so you could give up. I had hoped you would win, or at least stay strong until the bitter end just like Edwards said you would last night. If you were going to give up, why did you try so hard in the primaries? You should have simply given up before you started. I imagine that you thought you were doing the right thing - giving America what they want. Wouldn't it have been better to wait and find out what they actually wanted? People wonder what you told Bush quietly before the debates. I am no longer one of them. Your concession this morning changes everything. It makes your entire campaign a sad joke, a pathetic show by the politically dead Democratic party. As far as I'm concerned, you whispered to Bush that you weren't for real. 'No worries, Dubya, I'm going to give up anyway.' I hope that you realize that you have abandoned some 55,074,905 people. A lot of us are never going to forgive you. This is why voter turnout is normally so low - we the people have no faith in our politicians. I didn't vote for you so you could give up. You've wasted my vote. You've wasted my opinion. And you've wasted the opinons of millions. At the same time, you were a waste of our votes. -Theodore |
